Few films have as exciting a behind the scenes story as The Revenant. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a nineteenth century frontiersman who is mauled by a bear and left for dead, is Alejandro G. Iñárritu's follow-up to last year's Best Picture winner Birdman. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezski shot the film entirely using natural light over a torturous production for the intrepid cast and crew. With such an exciting production story and a director with awards credibility, it would be bizarre if The Revenant didn't make a serious appearance in the discussions for Best Picture. Lubezski seems destined to secure his third consecutive win for cinematography and Iñárritu feels like the probable frontrunner for Best Director. Early reviews have showered five-star acclaim on the film, which could emerge as the biggest success story of the awards season.
