Oscars 2017: Predicting The Winners
20. Best Supporting Actor
Will Win: Mahershala Ali Should Win: Mahershala Ali Surprise Win: Lucas Hedges
Mahershala Ali was one of 2016's most talked-about actors, thanks to appearances in Luke Cage and playing Chiron's father figure, drug dealer Juan, in Moonlight. Hopefully, 2017 will see him recognised for that work.
Juan defies stereotype, presenting a positive spin on a role traditionally seen in a negative light. He is believable and lovable as the only man in Chiron's life who truly cares about him. Ali is thoroughly deserving, especially for the breathtaking scene where he practically baptises young Chiron in the sea.
His is the kind of performance that comes along once in a while to blow everything else out of the water, despite how little screen-time he actually has. Moonlight won't get many wins on the night, but Ali is one of its best chances of an Oscar.
Manchester By The Sea has the most potential to upset the obvious winners in several categories, and the Supporting Actor category is no exception. Lucas Hedges as young Patrick Chandler is another threat, with his mature portrayal as a grieving son struggling to get used to his new carer.
