6. Best Original Screenplay

Who Should Win

La La Land.

I was all ready to say Manchester By The Sea should win here, because its screenplay really is a marvel, but then I read La La Land's. All of the emotion and magic, the joy and heartache that Chazelle pours into his movie is right there on the page, and it comes to life reading it. The final few pages in particular leave you ready to cry at La La Land all over again.

Who Will Win

Manchester By The Sea.

It's a very tight race between Manchester and La La Land, but Kenneth Lonergan's screenplay is likely to just about come out on top. Everything about his movie begins on the page, his screenplay a textbook example of how to write one. The WGA will give us a better clue, but Lonergan is a very well respected writer, and it's a good chance to give his film some major recognition, and an area La La Land is vulnerable.
