Oscars 2018: 10 Movies That Could Win Best Picture Next Year

The Film

The breakout hit of Sundance, Call Me By Your Name chronicles a love affair on the Italian Riviera between a a 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) and an American academic (Armie Hammer) who comes to stay at his parents' villa during the summer. Adapted from a novel by André Aciman, it's directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Guadagnino, James Ivory, and Walter Fasano.

Why It Could Win

The film was by some distance the most buzzed about movie at this year's Sundance, and then continued to garner an incredible response at Berlin Film Festival. Though it's still a long way off, that gives it an excellent launchpad for a major awards season campaign, especially if it gets the right backing from Sony.

Moonlight became the first LGBT movie to win Best Picture, which has hopefully opened the door for more awards success in the future for these stories. Hammer is already being touted as a strong Best Actor contender, while some have put Michael Stuhlbarg as the early frontrunner for a Supporting win.

The movie seems to be strong in all the right categories, including direction, writing, and cinematography, and while it'll take serious legs to sustain a challenge all the way through to next year, the buzz behind the movie suggests it'll certainly be capable of doing so.
