Oscars 2018: 16 WTF Moments

9. That Totally Pointless Military Tribute Montage

Of the many montages and video packages that aired throughout the night, the most baffling was the tribute to the military and to war movies in general, introduced by Vietnam War vet and Hostiles star Wes Studi.

The montage, which featured movies such as Saving Private Ryan, American Sniper, The Deer Hunter and Zero Dark Thirty, felt like a mostly hollow, pointless tribute to the "heroes" of war, and couldn't feel more tonally at-odds with a show that was focused on lauding diversity and creativity.

That's not to denigrate the good work soldiers do, but did we really need an awkward tribute to the troops in this of all years, on a show that almost ran four hours long no less?
