Oscars 2018: 5 Awards The Academy Got Right (And 8 They Got Wrong)

3. Best Original Screenplay - Get Out

Get Out
Universal Pictures

A hotly contested category this, especially as it included the two Best Picture frontrunners The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, along with the acclaimed Lady Bird and The Big Sick.

It could've went to any of them, really, but Get Out was the most deserving. It felt like it really needed to be rewarded somewhere, given how it's remained such a big part of the zeitgeist for so long, and while there were better-directed movies and better movies overall, its screenplay is a thing of wonder.

Not only is the film a success as an extremely dark comedy, but the screenplay perfectly blends that with its genuine horror elements and adds in a biting, razor-sharp social commentary for a stunningly original mix. It's extremely layered with symbolism, double meanings, and foreshadowing, and manages to be both political and populist entertainment. For the sheer balance achieved in bringing all those seemingly disparate strands together, along with its genuine originality, Get Out was the choice here.
