Oscars 2018: 9 Ups & 8 Downs
8. A Fantastic Woman Makes Transgender Oscar History
Excellent Chilean drama A Fantastic Woman rightly took home the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, making Academy Awards history by being the first transgender-themed movie with an openly transgender actor in the lead role to ever win an Oscar.
It was great seeing lead actress Daniela Vega on the Oscar stage with director Sebastian Lelio, and Vega also appeared on stage later to introduce Sufjan Stevens' performance of "Mysteries of Love", making her the first openly transgender performer to ever present at the Oscars.
An important, watershed moment for the trans community and for a general sense of inclusion, hopefully the Oscars' producers will continue to be this forward-thinking in the future.
