Oscars 2018: Predicting All The Nominees

16. Actress In A Supporting Role

Allison Janney I Tonya

Last year some category wrangling allowed Viola Davis to win here for Fences, despite the fact she's really a lead in that film. There's no such trickery this year, with all performances definitely supporting, but that doesn't mean there'll be many surprises either.

The clear narrative is that of Allison Janney (I, Tonya) vs Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird), with both picking up lots of nominations and the former already getting some big wins. It's here that The Big Sick, which has slipped out of the picture, should get some deserved love too, and the same goes for Netflix's Mudbound. The Shape of Water will continue its dominance too, with Downsizing's Hong Chau the best outside bet, but likely to be ignored with the rest of that movie.

Nominees:

Allison Janney (I, Tonya)

Mary J. Blige (Mudbound)

Holly Hunter (The Big Sick)

Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird)

Octavia Spencer (The Shape Of Water)
