What It Deserved: Supporting Actor

Timothée Chalamet has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the last couple of years, gaining wide acclaim for his incredible turn in Call Me By Your Name, and Beautiful Boy looked set to secure the young actor his second Oscar nomination.

To see Beautiful Boy itself is great is perhaps stretching things slightly - there are a few too many issues with the story for that - but there's no doubt about describing Chalamet's performance as such, with the actor confirming himself as one of prodigous talent.

Here he takes on the role of Nic Sheff, a teenage drug addict whose family attempts to help him get (and stay) clean. Chalamet fully steps into a difficult role, and becomes heartbreakingly believable as an addict who is constantly struggling to stay clean. It's a superb turn, with Chalamet alternating between hope and despair as effortlessly as breathing, and one that elevates the whole movie too.
