Oscars 2019: 13 Biggest Acting Snubs
9. Emily Blunt/Ben Whishaw (Mary Poppins Returns)
It's kind of insane that Emily Blunt didn't get a nomination of some sort this year, considering that several prognosticators were predicting that she could have easily gotten both a Best Actress nom for Mary Poppins Returns and a Best Supporting Actress nom for A Quiet Place. The snub for her work in Poppins, though, is outright ludicrous.
From the moment Blunt enters the picture (in a very supercalifragilisticexpialidocious kind of way) she is Mary Poppins. For a role that has been so defined by Julie Andrews' Oscar-winning performance for over five decades now, it is utterly remarkable just how thoroughly Blunt is able to not only channel Mary Poppins but outright disappear within the character. She gets a few more outright emotional beats than Andrews did in the first film and Blunt knocks them out of the park, with her performance of Where the Lost Things Go and her final bittersweet goodbye being especially high water marks.
And while Blunt is obviously the big draw here, it's also a shame that Ben Whishaw's incredible performance as the grown-up Michael Banks didn't get more Oscar love either. In a comparatively short amount of time, Whishaw is able to completely sell Michael's tragic arc and make it the beating heart of the film. His hushed and intimate performance of A Conversation is heartbreaking in its vulnerability.
