Oscars 2019: 13 Biggest Acting Snubs

6. Toni Collette/Alex Wolff (Hereditary)

In a year full of excellent horror films, Ari Aster's Hereditary was perhaps the most highly acclaimed of them all, earning rave reviews and almost immediately sparking a rallying cry for Toni Collette to earn an Oscar nomination for her performance.

And it's easy to see why. The film takes her character, Annie, on one helluva journey and Collette manages to nail every stop along the way from a fairly normal person to a Paimon-possessed meat-puppet. Most interestingly though is her performance amidst the madness that makes up the bulk of the film's runtime, as she desperately attempts to hold it together in increasingly dire circumstances. The dinner table scene is horrifying to watch and not for the typical horror move reasons. It's because of the sheer tension in the room and the way that Collette is able to suck all of the oxygen out of the scene with the single line of "I never wanted to be your mother".

Her all-around remarkable craft and dedication to the role pays off in spades and should have easily earned her a nom. But the quieter and stranger choice from the film would have to be Alex Wolff's performance as her son, Peter. Wolff's performance sees his character dealing with his own form of escalating madness, but his standout moment comes just after the accidental death of his sister. Aster keeps the camera on Wolff and just allows him to just react for several minutes and the results are absolutely gut-wrenching.
