Who Should Win

A Night At The Garden

As is often the case, the Documentary Shorts are filled with timely, important topics, and none more so than A Night at the Garden. A short documentary needs to pack a punch and be informative in a short space of time: this one, which uses footage from a Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939, does both in just seven minutes. It's the shortest of the bunch, and the oldest in terms of footage, yet it's also the one that feels wholly relevant and that you won't be able to stop thinking about.

Who Will Win

Black Sheep

The short categories are among the hardest to predict, since they're the films with the least exposure. Black Sheep, however, does seem to fit the most with what voters look for. This story, which tackles a harrowing story of racism in the UK - when Damilola Taylor was killed, in one of the country's most high-profile murder cases, the mother of another young black boy moves her son from London to Essex, where he becomes part of a white gang - fits with being both extremely timely and topical, but also sees someone overcoming adversity. That double whammy should be enough to give the doc the win.
