Oscars 2019: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)
19. Live-Action Short
Nominees: Detainment, Fauve, Marguerite, Mother, Skin
Who Should Win
Fauve
It's a pretty bleak year for the Live-Action Shorts category, with most of them feeling grim, if not downright depressing. Fauve doesn't break that trend - its story of two young boys who come across a mine turns dark and desperate - but it is the one that makes the most out of it. Jeremy Conte shows real promise with his direction here - which is in part what the shorts should do - as he pits this coming-of-age story into areas both horrifying and emotional.
Who Will Win
Marguerite
This story - a bittersweet look into the past of an elderly woman, who confronts her own sexuality when discovering her nurse is a lesbian - is an affecting and gentle short film, which should play very well with the voters who see it, and has enough buzz to be ticked by those who haven't. It's played very well on the festival circuit over the last year, and while predicting the shorts is always one of the trickiest parts of the Oscars, this appears to be the frontrunner going into the night.
