Oscars 2020 Nominations: 16 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises
5. Snub: Alita: Battle Angel - Best Visual Effects
The Best Visual Effects category has a tendency for snubbing deserving nominees, and this year was certainly no exception.
Though The Avengers, The Irishman, and 1917 were all deserving nominees, there's certainly a case to be made against The Lion King's uncanny valley CGI animals, and also Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not really offering anything particularly fresh to the VFX landscape.
But one film which clearly should've made the cut was Alita: Battle Angel. Say what you want about the film as a whole, but Weta Digital, DNEG, and Framestore's work on the film is absolutely spectacular, and really makes the blockbuster as much of a spectacle as it is.
Sadly we're going to assume that all the pre-release hand-wringing about Alita's (Rosa Salazar) "unsettling" oversized eyes might've swayed voters away.
