Oscars 2020: Predicting All The Nominees

11. Visual Effects

Avengers Endgame Tony Stark
Marvel Studios

It goes without saying that the visual effects field favours huge-budget blockbusters, though it has occasionally allowed smaller movies to triumph - namely Ex Machina's historic victory back in 2016.

The bake-off process means there's only 10 films to choose from, and considering that Cats somehow made the cut, we can probably assume that won't land in the final five.

The big question is whether or not Alita: Battle Angel will prevail, given that it's easily one of the most impressive VFX gigs of the year, yet its momentum may have been harmed by all that pre-release hand-wringing over Alita's bug-eyed appearance.

Then again, everything else here feels pretty neatly locked in, so don't expect any huge surprises.

Nominees:

1917

Avengers: Endgame

The Irishman

The Lion King

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
