Oscars 2020: Predicting All The Nominees
6. Original Screenplay
It's incredibly rare for Best Picture winners not to at least be nominated for a screenplay award, so these categories can also be quite telling for a film's chances for the Big One.
Though back in 1998, Titanic won Best Picture and ten other Oscars without its screenplay being recognised, so it's not a concrete rule.
Quentin Tarantino is probably a lock for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood despite missing out on a Writers Guild of America nomination (only due to him not being a member), and the Academy will surely be unable to resist the ingenuity of Marriage Story and Parasite's scripts.
The two other slots are a battle between 1917, Knives Out, and The Farewell, and it feels like The Farewell will sadly be the most likely casualty here, especially given the rather disappointing lack of diversity on this year's circuit so far.
But don't entirely discount Booksmart, which scored surprise Best Original Screenplay nominations from both the WGA and BAFTA and could sneak into the pack of five.
Nominees:
1917
Knives Out
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
