Oscars 2020: Predicting All The Nominees
2. Best Director
The Directors Guild of America nominations are perennially a strong indicator of what the Academy will spring for, sometimes with a single exception, so don't expect much disparity.
Joon-ho, Mendes, Scorsese, and Tarantino all feel locked up, so the only real question mark is Taika Waititi, who scored an unexpected DGA nod.
Given the controversy surrounding the lack of female Best Director nominees at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, along with the diversified Academy membership in recent years, it's possible that Greta Gerwig steals slot five away from Waititi.
Though considering the fast-cooling industry response to Little Women as a whole, Waititi is probably the safer pick.
Nominees:
Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)
Sam Mendes (1917)
Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)
Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit)
