Oscars 2020: Predicting All The Nominees
15. International Feature Film
91 films were eligible for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, whittled down to a 10-film shortlist.
In a rare move, Macedonian documentary Honeyland actually made the shortlist, given that this category is typically reserved for narrative features.
Bafflingly France opted to select Les Misérables over the magnificent Portrait of a Lady on Fire to represent them, a cynical move that will probably pay off given that film's more populist visibility.
As with the documentary field, though, International Feature Film is a tough one to call and prone to baffling left-field choices.
In addition to Les Mis, Parasite is a lock both for a nomination and the eventual win, while Pedro Almodovar's Pain and Glory is also guaranteed a nomination.
For the other two slots, Atlantics has the major advantage of having been released on Netflix recently, while Honeyland will benefit from dual visibility in the documentary field.
But Atlantics or Honeyland could possibly be pushed out by Russia's Beanpole, which is one of the year's best-reviewed foreign-language films and has a passionate band of cheerleaders behind it.
Nominees:
Atlantics
Honeyland
Les Misérables
Pain and Glory
Parasite
