Oscars 2020: Predicting The Winners In Every Category

15. Best Sound Editing & Sound Mixing

Le Mans 66
Fox

WINNER (Sound Editing)

1917

NOMINEES

Ford v Ferrari

Joker

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

This is quite simply a two-horse race between 1917 and Ford v Ferrari. War films historically perform well here, yet Ford v Ferrari's distinctive engine sounds greatly enhance its visceral impact (especially when viewed on the big screen).

1917 is the showier pick, and we'll go with it on the basis of its greater popularity over Ford v Ferrari, but it's entirely possible the racing biopic sneaks away with the gong.

WINNER (Sound Mixing)

Ford v Ferrari

NOMINEES

Ad Astra

Joker

1917

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

If sound editing is the creation of the sounds themselves, sound mixing rewards how they're eased into the overall soundscape in conjunction with dialogue, musical score, and all the other, more subtle aural elements.

Once again this is a two-horse race, though considering that war films tend to fare less-well in the sound mixing field and Ford v Ferrari won the Cinema Audio Society's top award, we'll go with that.

This could totally go either way, but a splitting of the sound honours between 1917 and Ford v Ferrari would be a satisfying recognition of both movies' fine sound work.
