Lee Isaac Chung's semi-autobiographical retelling of his childhood is the most wholesome film of the year with a burning sense of compassion that rings true throughout. After a Korean family leaves their country in pursuit of the American Dream, they eventually settle in Arkansas where they plan to build a farm.

Steven Yeun stars as the patriarch of the Yi family, trying to push the farm into becoming a successful business while keeping his family as happy as possible. Yuh-Jung Youn is a scene-stealer as the foul mothed grandmother who seeks to connect to with her grandchildren. Both actors have reaped Oscar nominations for their work (with Youn expected to win) but it is Alan Kim who is the true standout here as the youngest child David.

Minari is told through David's eyes as we experience the world through his perspective. Everything David sees is a new experience and Kim does an excellent job of being suitably amazed or shocked by anything new he comes into contact with. His relationship with Youn's character is particularly charming and a delight to watch.

Of all the films nominated for Best Picture, Minari is the warmest. A sentimental coming of age story that is emotionally arresting and smartly written.
