Oscars 2021: Ranking The Nominated Performances From Worst To Best
14. Olivia Colman - The Father
In a film dominated by Anthony Hopkins, it is to Oliva Colman's credit that she managed to stand out enough for a nomination here. Colman plays Anne, the daughter of her mentally deteriorating aging father. The Father is an incredibly hard watch and the strained relationship that dementia facilitates can be heart-breaking to see unfold.
Colman portrays the quiet sadness of watching her father slip away before her eyes with a great sense of pain and anger. She is a necessary part of a film that grounds you in the real life consequences of those left behind after a loss. It's strong work from start to finish.
She doesn't manage to come close to touching Hopkins, understandably as he is doing all the heavy lifting here but she is still worthy of praise. What is likely an afterglow nomination in the wake of Colman's Oscar win a few years ago for The Favourite, it would be highly surprising to see Colman best four other actresses looking for their first Oscar in the supporting actress category.
