Oscars 2021 Review: 8 Ups & 8 Downs

7. Best Adapted Screenplay: The Father Beats Nomadland

The Father Olivia Colman Anthony Hopkins

One of the most hotly contested awards this year was Best Adapted Screenplay, for though the favourite going into the show was Nomadland, it was far from a sure thing with The Father beating it to the BAFTA a few weeks prior.

As wonderfully written as Nomadland might be, the nimbleness with which Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller adapt Zeller's own play to the cinematic medium is extremely impressive.

Considering how virtually every other nominated movie adapted from a play this year felt at least a little stage-y, that The Father is wholly cinematic in every fiber of its being is a testament to not only the direction and acting but the fantastic script.
