Oscars 2021 Review: 8 Ups & 8 Downs

5. The Cringe-Worthy "Oscar Trivia" Segment

Though this year's Oscar ceremony was well-paced and fast-moving for the most part, the final moments of the show were agonisingly bloated out by an horrendous "Oscar trivia" segment in which Lil Rel Howery quizzed a few members of the audience on their Oscar music knowledge.

Andra Day soon enough talked of her love for Prince's "Purple Rain" - which was snubbed for a nomination back in 1985 - before Howery turned his attention to Glenn Close.

What followed was a blatantly scripted but no-less-awkward skit in which Close identified E.U.'s 1988 one-hit wonder track "Da Butt," before getting up and effectively twerking.

While on one hand it was mildly amusing to see Close letting loose, it overall felt like such a desperately contrived attempt to create a Viral Moment in what's sure to be one of the least-watched Oscar shows in history that most of the fun was sucked right out.

At this point in the show most European viewers were very eager to get to bed, and distending the otherwise pacy ceremony with this nonsense just wasn't worth it.
