Who Should Win: Sound of Metal
The fact that Sound of Metal even received a Best Picture nomination at all is completely shocking to anyone who watched it on release last year with few assumptions about its future awards prospects.
It is a highly unconventional Awards Movie in the best possible way, eschewing the gong-baiting sentiment so often associated with the Oscars while telling a deeply affecting, superbly acted story with no fat on its bones whatsoever.
Who Will Win: Nomadland
Though this year's Best Picture field feels a little "smaller" than usual given that many larger-scale projects were pushed out of the awards calendar entirely, this is a rare lineup without even a single mediocre movie.
That said, Nomadland's Best Picture victory has felt set in stone for months, and there's basically no chance whatsoever that anything will pull a Parasite and unseat the frontrunner.
On one hand its road to Best Picture has been so foregone as to make for a rather anti-climactic, even "boring" end to awards season, but most importantly, it's a great movie.
