Oscars 2022: Every Acting Nominee Ranked

13. Denzel Washington - The Tragedy Of Macbeth

King Richard Will Smith
A24

Scoring his tenth Oscar nomination, Denzel Washington has entered an entirely new category of great actor with his performance in Joel Coen's haunting Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Bringing his usual level of commanding power to the screen whenever he's around, Washington's portrayal of a man who dreams of claiming the throne is twisting, murderous, and conflicted, and works beautifully with Coen's gorgeous black-and-white direction.

It's not quite at the same level of Malcolm X or He Got Game, but this is certainly Washington at full power, working with a filmmaker and cast at the top of their games to give a performance that blends together his strongest traits as an actor.

Though this time around victory seems out of his reach, this performance is the perfect reminder of just how much Washington has left to show.
