7. Dune

Denis Villeneuve's name may be inexplicably missing from the Best Director ballot this year, but his recent sci-fi blockbuster epic Dune nonetheless managed to score ten other well-deserved nominations elsewhere.

In terms of pure spectacle, Dune is an absolute joy, brought to life by flawless VFX, enrapturing sound design, exciting action sequences and a sense of scope sure to be built on and improved in its hotly anticipated sequel.

That last point is what lets it down, though: This being the first part of a two-part saga, Dune's noticeably unfinished story leaves it feeling narratively unsatisfying, and tough to judge without seeing how things progress down the line.

But, honestly, this just a minor gripe. When a movie looks this awe-inspiring, capable of sending the audience into an entirely new world through the power of its visual appeal and glorious set pieces alone, there can be no doubt it's deserving of the Academy's greatest nomination.
