Of course not every nominated film can win an Oscar, but it was disappointing to see two of the year's most acclaimed films receive no Academy gold at all.

Flee, despite being nominated in the improbable trifecta of Best International Film, Animated Film, and Documentary, failed to win any of these three awards, no matter that it's received universal critical praise.

Joachim Trier's brilliant drama The Worst Person in the World, which if we're honest should've been nominated for Best Picture, also flamed out by failing to win either of its two nominations - Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.

The former was always going to go to Drive My Car, but did Belfast really have a better screenplay than The Worst Person in the World? Not a chance.
