Oscars 2023: 10 Ups & 5 Downs

3. Jamie Lee Curtis Wins A Blatant Career Oscar

Now, this is a tricky one.

On one hand, everybody loves Jamie Lee Curtis and she's certainly overdue an Oscar, but it's tough not to see her Best Supporting Actress win for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once as one of the most blatant career wins in recent Oscar history.

For starters, Curtis' performance is easily the lesser of the five nominated, and if you're going to give the award to anyone from that movie, it clearly should've been Stephanie Hsu.

But beyond that, Curtis gave a fun performance that didn't really do anything nomination-worthy, and it's easy to think of about a dozen actresses who would've been more deserving of the nod - pretty much anyone from Women Talking, Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Nina Hoss (Tár), Samantha Morton (She Said), and Lashana Lynch (The Woman King), to name just a few.

Again, it's hard to get too bent out of shape about this, but it's always a bit sour when the Academy throws a blatant career-honouring bone to a veteran actor while snubbing performances that were so much better.
