Oscars: Every Best Picture Winner Ever Ranked From Worst To Best
69. How Green Was My Valley (1941)
John Ford's engrossing drama about life in a grim Welsh mining village may never get a fair shake from most people due to beating out not only Citizen Kane but also The Maltese Falcon for Best Picture.
However, if you can bring yourself to approach it with an open-mind, it is far from a bottom-tier Best Picture winner - if certainly an undeserving one all the same - employing gorgeous cinematography to bring its unexpected setting to life on screen, while painting a family fighting against enormous adversity with tremendous compassion.
Is it one of Ford's best? Absolutely not, but the vitriol it gets is typically not deserved.
