Though there remains a passionate quarter of film buffs who maintain that Alexander Payne's brilliant Sideways was robbed of Best Picture in 2005 - and they just might be right - there's little point battling against the overwhelming, unexpected power of Clint Eastwood's sports drama.

Eastwood is marvellous in double-duty here alongside Hillary Swank and Morgan Freeman (who all won Oscars for their efforts), upending the conventional boxing movie formula with a devastating mid-film twist, which while somewhat divisive, nevertheless powers the film into a wholly more intriguing direction.

If you came here hoping for the female Rocky, boy, you were gonna go home unhappy.
