The Coen Brothers' subversive neo-western is one of the more divisive Best Picture winners of modern times, though also one of the most consistently acclaimed.

Whether you're with the Coens or felt that Paul Thomas Anderson's towering There Will Be Blood was the rightful winner, there's little denying the grim effectiveness of their darkly comic thriller.

Loaded with terrific actors - especially a never-better Javier Bardem - brutally violent and hilarious in the way only the Coens know, it's a rare Cormac McCarthy adaptation that really works in every respect.

The sparseness and ambiguity might frustrate some, but the film's a sure grower, burrowing itself deep into the viewer's psyche.
