It takes a one-of-a-kind artist to execute material this challenging this well, and Steven Spielberg typically delivered with his single Best Picture winner to date, surprisingly enough.

Schindler's List is the most iconic and enduring Holocaust movie ever made and understandably so: from the immaculate performances - especially Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes - to Janusz KamiƄski's evocative cinematography and the emotional sledgehammer of an ending, it is an achingly, heart-rendingly human look at one of recent humanity's darkest acts (and the light that emerged as a result).

Nothing else nominated that year even came close, and while the grim subject matter and 195-minute runtime mean you probably won't return to it often, it's so soul-searingly effective and hard to shake you won't really need to.
