Outlaw King Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The Script Is Pretty Basic

Though the movie's story is mostly effective and some of the dialogue proves memorably savage, the script as a whole - written by five screenwriters, including Mackenzie himself - does feel pretty rote and workmanlike at times.

There are countless moments where a character reels off exposition in a totally unnatural way solely for the audience's benefit, almost as though they're reading a Wikipedia summary to whoever they're sharing the screen with.

Clearly the feeling was that the inherent intrigue of the real-life plot would be enough to suffice, and thankfully it mostly is, even if the characters end up sounding a touch robotic at times. Just a little more poetry and imagination here could've gone a long way.

So, Outlaw King has its issues, but it's still absolutely worth a sit. Here's what Mackenzie and co. got right...
