17. Dust Bunny
Dust Bunny is an absolute fever dream of a movie, the sort of which one can scarcely believe actually got made at this level of production quality in the current filmmaking landscape.
Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller makes one hell of a feature film debut with this delirious fantasy-action film about a hitman (Mads Mikkelsen) who is approached by a young girl (Sophie Sloan) to kill the monster living under her bed which she believes ate her family.
Fuller holds nothing back with his utterly madcap vision here - at times aggressively weird in ways sure to alienate mainstream viewers, and yet thoughtful, inventive, and visually stunning in basically every moment.
The eye-popping production design combines with stellar practical and digital effects and a game ensemble cast to deliver one of the most inspired genre mash-ups of recent years.
Mikkelsen is terrific, because of course he is, but newcomer Sophie Sloan holds her own incredibly well opposite him, and the cast is rounded out nicely by Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalchian.
Though lauded ever since its TIFF premiere last September, Dust Bunny was basically sent out to die by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, given that it hit cinemas with minimal marketing and grossed less than $1 million globally. A travesty.
