One of the most blisteringly original films of the year or really any year, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a hilariously deranged follow-up to Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol's cult series Nirvanna the Band the Show.

But even if you've never heard of the original show, this feature-length sequel stands ably on its own two feet, as the titular band members (Johnson and McCarrol) accidentally travel back in time while trying to get a gig at the historic Toronto venue The Rivoli.

This is absolutely a movie best seen with as little prior knowledge as possible, because it's one of the most relentlessly creative and gut-bustingly funny time travel movies of all time.

Despite being produced for a mere $2 million, Johnson and McCarrol pull out every sneaky filmmaking trick in the book to realise their epic, big-scale vision, in turn blurring the lines between what was meticulously planned and what was a happy accident.

Though Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie has been received extremely well within its core fandom, it absolutely deserves to blow up far outside its niche.
