Owen Wilson: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Vann Siegert - The Minus Man (1999)

This one might have evaded you, but it's definitely worth checking out. Given a limited American release back in 1999, The Minus Man is the film adaptation of Lew McCreary's novel about a psychotic murderer named Vann Siegert, who seemingly breezes his way from town to town quietly making people disappear. Owen Wilson is cast as Siegert, and makes for a very, very creepy serial killer. It's a performance that's so unsettlingly convincing you may never see the star quite the same way again. Looking more like a preaching Mormon than a movie star, Wilson's offbeat performance is even more haunting given the complete absence of his typical wisecracking persona you've come to know and love over the years. The Minus Man is reasonably effective as film on the whole, but it's Wilson who truly steals the show with his cold eyes and sickly smile. He creates a kind of quiet evil that's rarely seen in a genre so often preoccupied with bloodshed, and Vann Siegert remains one of the most intriguing and talented performances of Wilson's career.
