A romantic comedy where the jealous ex of the lead character's new girlfriend is a guy in a wheelchair? That could provide the fuel for a truly provocative, interesting film which challenges preconceptions of disabled people on film. Except The Ex craps out on its own premise halfway through, when it turns out Jason Bateman's faking his disability. Still, Bateman's Chip and Zach Braff's Tom still continue to battle over the affections of Amanda Peet's Sofia, but the jokes don't come nearly as thick and fast as you might expect from that impressive central love triangle. Then Paul Rudd turns up in a minor role and it's like, hey, Paul Rudd's always funny! He's not a miracle worker though. Here plays an intentionally unlikeable kitchen manager for one scene, and it turns out Paul Rudd cannot play somebody who isn't at least a little charming.
Tom Baker is the Comics Editor at WhatCulture! He's heard all the Doctor Who jokes, but not many about Randall and Hopkirk. He also blogs at http://communibearsilostate.wordpress.com/
