It appears that, not unlike crops, Paul Rudd has his ocassional fallow periods. There are entire years where he just appears in crappy films: 2007 had I Could Never Be Your Woman and The Ex, but far worse is 2010's one-two punch of How Do You Know followed by Dinner For Schmucks. The latter being the knock-out blow in that combo. Dinner For Schmucks is one of the worst comedies ever made. Which is an easy thing to measure objectively, because comedies are supposed to make people laugh, and nobody laughs at Dinner For Schmucks. It's not helped by the unwholesome premise of a dinner party where powerful people compete to bring the biggest freak they can. Rudd's mid-level financial executive Tim is already pretty unsympathetic when you learn his profession, and it only goes downhill as he recruits Steve Carrell's hapless weirdo Barry for the dinner. It's a singularly nasty, misanthropic film and even Rudd struggles to make his character in any way likeable.
