The cinematic hapless 'everyman'
Paul Rudd is already
bringing the schmuck Steve Carell to dinner this summer, and now comes word from
The Hollywood Reporter that he is signed up to play an idiot brother in an upcoming Indie comedy. The move is imaginatively titled
My Idiot Brother and it will find Rudd as;
'an idealist dealing with his overbearing mother who crashes into the homes of his three ambitious sisters and, in succession, brings truth, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives while also wreaking havoc'.
So I'm guessing a kind of Jack Lemmon 'buddy boy' from
The Apartment but with family/domestic issues keeping him grounded rather than the career ladder in Wilder's classic? Count me in I suppose, but Rudd's dangerously becoming a member of the Jason Bateman school of
"he plays the same damn role everytime". Jesse Peretz, who had an awful time with his Zach Braff comedy
Fast Track (also known as
The Ex) that earned
$5 million worldwide just a year after it was being speculated as a potential high-revenue comedy is attached to direct based on a script his sister co-wrote. Filming will begin next month once the family roles are cast.
