Paul W.S. Anderson leaves SPY HUNTER

Is that it for Universal's adaptation after 5 years of trying?

At this point it looks unlikely we are ever going to see Spy Hunter make it to the big screen. After nearly five years of development at Universal, the project which seems to have had Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson attached forever is once again without a director. Frequent video game to big screen helmer Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator) has decided to leave the project he couldn't get off the ground after 12 months of trying.

Spy Hunter has gone through more re-writes than we can possibly keep track and Anderson is just the latest director to get bored with Universal over the project after John Woo left it some years back. Latino Review claim that this comment he gave at Comic Con when talking about Death Race proves that he is no longer set to make the film...
I don€™t know if I€™ll ever do another car movie after this, because I really feel like we pushed it to the max and the only other car movie I€™ll do is maybe a sequel to this, knock on wood, if this movie does well enough to deserve that, I really think we€™ve kind of raised the bar when it comes to car action€.we€™ve done everything practical, we€™ve done spectacular stunts, we€™ve kept it R rated, really hard, we€™ve had the actors do a lot of their own driving, so you know, I think we€™ve really maxed our car movie, so I think we€™ve laid down a challenge to any one else, I think we€™re now the movie to beat.
Spy Hunter is a popular Midway video game that revolves around a transforming supercar called the Interceptor which was originally setup to be a big breakthrough movie for The Rock... but now he might not need it. And I'm sure Universal are just about sick of this.
