Hoffman rightfully deserved his Best Actor Oscar for playing Truman Capote in the 2005 biopic, and though he was nominated four times it remained his only win. Capote is the kind of movie that hinges entirely on the performance of the single lead. He played supporting characters much more often than lead roles, but he proved his ability to carry a film with this spellbinding performance. He took months to prepare, learning the diction and mannerisms of Truman Capote, and though there have been several biopics that depict the life of the writer no single performance has come close to achieving what Hoffman achieved. Scenes from the entire movie could have populated this list, but a notable one is perhaps Truman's final visit to the men who became the subject of his most famous book In Cold Blood.
