Pixar's 11 Greatest Moments

5. Mr. Incredible Apologizes To His Family - The Incredibles

the-incrediblesThe Incredibles is probably my favorite superhero movie that does not involve Christopher Nolan in some way. Part of what makes it so great is that - like Nolan's Batman trilogy - the actual person behind the costume is just as interesting as the superhero persona. While Bob Parr is not as emotionally traumatized as Bruce Wayne or conflicted as Kal-El, he still has some inner demons to confront, which is what makes him a fascinating character. In the film, Bob is going through a mid-life crisis where he has to adjust to supers being outlawed. Forced to work a dull job at an insurance agency, Bob becomes jaded and yearns for the good ol' days, going as far as to listen to police scanners so he can rush to the scene and get thrills just for kicks. It's sad and funny at the same time. His obsession with wanting to reclaim his glory years gives him the opportunity to work with the mysterious Mirage and get paid to do the usual superhero stuff like safe islands from malfunctioning equipment. Of course, he eventually finds out that Syndrome (or Buddy, the kid from the fan club) is the evil mastermind behind it all, with a plan to wipe out all the superheroes. With Bob's family forced to come to the island and rescue him, Mr. Incredible has put everyone he loves in grave danger. When things look bleak in a holding cell, Bob has realized his mistake and apologizes to his family for putting them in his situation. It's now that he realizes he should have just appreciated what he had instead looking to the past. It's a heartfelt scene that makes the character feel real despite him being an animated cartoon. It served as Bob's character development as his goal became to save his family and amend his mistakes as opposed to chasing after his prime from the early days. If only all superhero films had characters and moments like this.
