Playing at SUNDANCE 2009 are...
Sundance is one of my favourite festivals to read up and follow on every January because it truly marks the beginning of a whole new year in film. No "Best of Year Lists" quite capture the feeling of the beginning of a new year quite like discovering new movies. And after all it's the festival where classics like RESERVOIR DOGS and BRICK were first discovered. It's usually where at least one gem showcases it's talent and although there is usually quite a lot of the Indie pretentious fluff trying to be the next JUNO or LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE screening... sometimes you get something that actually is the next JUNO. We are hoping to cover the festival (which is pending application approval) and if we do, we will have daily video blog entries and tons of reviews letting you know exactly how things are going down. Over 3,661 feature length films were submitted this year hoping to get a place on the schedule, of which 118 were selected. 87 of them will be making their North American Premiere. Wow, it really is tough out there for Indie filmmakers. The movies from the press release (which follows below) which took my eye. Sorry for the English-language heavy list but I don't know a lot about these foreign productions at this stage.
BIG FAN
This is the one that seems to be getting the most buzz pre-festival chatter. It's from Robert Siegel, writer of THE WRESTLER who also takes up the directing duties for the first time. The plot reads... The world of a parking garage attendant is changed when he gets beaten up by his favorite player on the New York Giants. And it's NOT A OUT AND OUT COMEDY. How delightfully depressing. It's a starring vehicle for the great character actor Patton Oswalt and could turn him into a legit big time player. PAPER HEARTS
The other movie that is getting all the buzz after The Hollywood Reporter ran an article on it last week is PAPER HEARTS, a movie quickly put together under the radar this year. It stars Michael Cera who teams up with Asian actress and real life girlfriend Charlyne Yi (she was briefly in KNOCKED UP) who go on a journey together to discover true love. Or something like that. Some speculate they may actually be playing themselves. Nicholas Jasenovec wrote and directed the movie. Apparantely it's brilliant and this Cera kid is on a huge role right now.AN EDUCATION
An original screenplay by one of my personal favourite Brit authors Nick Hornby (HIGH FIDELITY, ABOUT A BOY)... the movie is set in the 1960's and tells the story of a sixteen-year-old girl (Carey Mulligan) whose Oxford aspirations get her involved with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard). Maybe I'm just sexually perverse by thinking both NOTES ON A SCANDAL and ELEGY are absolutely fantastic with similar storylines but I do dig these tales. This one has got a great supporting cast in Emma Thompson, Rosamund Pike and Alfred Molina. It's experienced Danish helmer Lone Scherfig's first Hollywood movie. I'm surprised this one is actually playing at festivals, with that line-up it screams theatrical release anyway? BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN
That happy-go-lucky Jim from The Office (aka John Krasinski) has co-wrote, directed and starred in a movie that follows Julianne Nicholson as a doctoral candidate in anthropology who tries to remedy the heartache of being dumped with little explanation, by interviewing men about their behavior. Krasinski himself, Dominic Cooper and Timothy Hutton star, presumably as some of the men. Who doesn't enjoy Krasinski's work on The Office... let's see how he makes the jump here. Oliver Hirschbiegel, the director of one of this decade's most powerful films DOWNFALL (about Hitler's final hours) and who had a tough time in Hollywood with last year's flop THE INVASION... is back with a IRA thriller starring Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt. Beginning in the late 60s, the movie which is currently shooting on location tells the story of two mens lives that are ruled by violence ending with the peace process in 1998. Sounds good.ADAM
Sometime it's the simplest of plot lines that take my interest... A lonely, autistic man, Adam, develops a relationship with his upstairs neighbor, Beth.Hugh Dancy, Rose Bryne (who had a great 2006 with 28 WEEKS LATER and SUNSHINE but was missing this year) star as Adam and Beth for writer/director Max Mayer.ARLEN FABER

My unhealthy crushes on Kat Dennings and Olivia Thirlby have me interested and you can never go wrong with Jeff Daniels. COLD SOULS
