Pokémon Detective Pikachu Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Third Act Is A Mess

No spoilers here, but after two acts that (mostly) veer on the right side of acceptable, the film's final reel is really quite a mess indeed.

It won't be much of a surprise that this is where Detective Pikachu lurches into CGI overload territory, serving up a number of cacophonous, back-to-back set-pieces which sadly lack any sense of inspiration or originality.

Elsewhere, a number of silly plot points are shovelled into the mix that might leave even hardcore Pokémon fans raising their eyebrows a tad.

That's not to ignore a couple of howlingly daft, predictable plot twists which, again, pander to audiences in the most flatly sentimental, obvious way possible.

There is fan service in the third act, for sure, but you'll also need to put up with some relatively unremarkable action and cloying "emotion" to enjoy it.
