Pokémon Detective Pikachu Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

Ups...

5. Ryan Reynolds' Pikachu Steals The Show (Obviously)

Detective Pikachu
Warner Bros.

Shocking absolutely no-one, Ryan Reynolds' performance as Pikachu is the main reason this movie works remotely as well as it does.

The wilfully jarring nature of the actor voicing Pikachu speaks for itself, yet Reynolds actually brings a great amount of personality and warmth to the part, becoming something more than the "Pikachu as Deadpool" that many fans expected.

It's definitely fair to say that Reynolds is under-served by the workmanlike script, but he brings it to life as best possible, and accounts for the overwhelming majority of the film's charm.

Whether you're a fan of the games or not, Pikachu is this film's biggest success, which is a major credit to both the first-rate CGI and Reynolds' assured voice-over work.
