Power Rangers Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

1. It Sets A Great Foundation For A Better Sequel

With Power Rangers tracking solidly at the box office and sensibly budgeted at "only" $100 million (these movies can run more than double that), a sequel is sure to happen short of an unforeseen financial disaster.

What's great about this film is that while it's certainly not perfect, it lays a rock solid foundation for the next one, which won't need to front-load itself with so much character work and can feature much more in the way of riotous action.

All the sequel really needs to do in order to succeed is follow the superhero sequel formula: it opens with the Rangers saving the world from a day-to-day threat, we get a few scenes of them hanging out as a firm team, then a new danger arrives, and that kickstarts the rest of the film.

As cynical as sequels can so frequently seem, this feels really right, because the filmmakers dared to make a slightly awkward gamble of a first film that worked much more often than it didn't.
