Power Rangers Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
5. The Rangers Can Actually Act
It was hard to get a bead on the actors playing the Rangers pre-release, largely because most of them haven't exactly acted in a lot of high-profile fare, but you know what? They're all unexpectedly great.
The easy stand-out is RJ Cyler as Billy, the sweet, endearing, insanely likeable nerd of the group, and the movie handles his autism extremely well without ever making it a defining character gimmick.
Becky G is also a remarkable Trini, and delivers a monologue about her parents refusing to accept her homosexuality that's genuinely emotional.
Dacre Montgomery and Ludi Lin follow along more conventional lines as Jason and Zack respectively, but they're undeniably good, and Naomi Scott's charming performance is sure to make a whole new generation of youngsters fall in love with the Pink Ranger, Kimberly.
The quality of these performances is a make-or-break for a movie focused on teen dynamics, and the casting department really struck gold here. It's shocking how good they all are, and how easy they are to like as a unit.
