Predator Skulls: 10 Mistakes It Needs To Avoid

5. Don't Bring Up The Predator Civil War

The Robert Rodriquez produced Predators introduced a new element to the serie's formula, a civil war between two different factions of Predators. Shane Black's sequel later picked up on this aspect of the previous film, asking the audience to believe that one faction is on our side and wants to aid humanity in its fight against the evil faction.

While Rodriquez's desire to expand the franchise's universe and keeps things fresh by introducing this new wrinkle in the story is understandable, the Predator works best as a monster with a single motive: take as many human skulls for trophies as possible.

The idea for a Predator/human team-up dates all the way back to 2004's Alien vs. Predator, when Lex, the hero of the feature, teamed-up with one to defeat the mutual threat of an Alien Queen. This decision made sense in the context of that film, but the idea that there are a subset of Predators eager to help humanity only undercuts the threatening nature of the extraterrestrial hunter.

Humans need to be totally outmatched and outclassed by their foe, otherwise the conceit that the tables have been flipped on humanity and we're no longer the top of the food chain becomes diluted, which makes for a dull time at the cinema.
