Predicting 2014's 10 Biggest Box Office Movies

6. How To Train Your Dragon 2 (Estimated Gross: $700m)

How To Train Your Dragon has become one of the most popular animated movies in recent memory since its release in March 2010, with anticipation riding high for the sequel. The original was a slow-burning success story at the box office, opening to $43.7m domestically and holding extremely well to finish with $216.7m, with a worldwide total just shy of $495m. The movie has also developed a strong following on home video, with over 5m units sold in the US alone, all but guaranteeing the sequel will end up grossing more. It also helps that as well as having an established fan-base, How To Train Your Dragon was an extremely well-reviewed movie that currently sits at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was also praised for its excellent use of 3D, a reputation that should entice more customers to shell out for the extra dimension. The marketing has also clearly emphasized that the timeline of the story has moved forward, which clearly shows that it won't just be more of the same. And of course, there is the four year gap between releases, which has this pegged as the 'must-see' animated movie of 2014. How To Train Your Dragon placed at number 10 on both the domestic and worldwide box office charts in 2010, but expect this one to finish much higher. The June 13 release date has it far enough away from The Lego Movie (April 11) that it has a virtual stranglehold on the family market, and will hold extremely well throughout the summer. Sequels to well-liked animated movies also generally gross much more than their predecessors with Toy Story 2, Shrek 2 and Ice Age 2 all comfortably out-earning the originals and How To Train Your Dragon 2 will similarly follow suit.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
