Estimated Box Office Gross: $800 million No, Independence Day is not yet part of a huge, sprawling franchise in the same way that many of the other movies on this list are, but there's no denying that the original movie - released in 1996, can you believe? - is beloved in such a way that it could still wind up being one of the 10 highest-grossing movies of the year. And that's with or without Will Smith involved. The movie's got Jeff Goldblum back to reprise his role from the original, after all, not to mention an undeniably large nostalgia factor that will convince everybody over the age of 21 to go and check this thing out (oh, and Bill Pullman). The recent trailer also made the flick look quite good, whilst the idea that we humans "stole" alien technology is a doozy. Independence Day was a bona fide phenomenon when it came out - the movie pulled in an epic $817 million, and there's a real good chance that this sequel could do similar numbers. More, if it's good. If Transformers can do it over and over again, surely this can?
